Everything is loud, it feels like. The kids are loud. The news is loud. These loud things are in our face constantly. Would you like something to listen to something that’s neither of those things? Well, good news. Witches wear many pointed hats and possess many skills, among them podcast hosting, producing, writing and recommending. I rounded up a sampling of shows witches work on and enjoy. I hope you find something good to listen to below and if you enjoy it, make sure you leave a good rating, if it’s rate-able.
Wokefield, where two middle-aged comedians realize all their problems started with Sweet Valley High (hosted by Elizabeth Gomez and Adrienne Gunn)
Comfort Food, the podcast about feeding our families and ourselves. “We’re on a wee pandemic hiatus, but hoping to be back in the spring.” (hosted by Amy Palanjian and Virginia Sole-Smith)
And Nothing Less: The Untold Stories of Women’s Fight, in which hosts Rosario Dawson and Retta guide us through this seven-part series, bringing us the stories we didn’t learn in our history books (written and produced by Robin Linn)
The Obscure Podcast: Frankenstein, in which comedian Michael Ian Black reads Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, aloud, for the first time, commenting as he goes. (also produced by Robin Linn)
Spooked, full of true-life supernatural stories, told first-hand by people who can barely believe it happened themselves. (produced and story scouted by Anne Ford)
Ladies First with Laura Brown, a podcast dedicated to and inspired by the women who are consistently brave, kind and curious, from the editors of InStyle. (also produced by Anne Ford)
Planted: Finding Your Roots In STEM Careers, a podcast from Chicago’s Morton Arboretum, will introduce students to some plant professionals with amazing careers. Play it for older youngsters interested in science! (Co-created by Jessica Turner-Skoff)
The Pay Check looks at women, work and money. The third season is forthcoming and the last season was all about motherhood (written and co-hosted by Bloomberg editor Francesca Levy)
Invisible Institute’s Somebody, recommended by a witch who says, “I did not work on this, but my very dear friend did. It is a Chicago mother’s journey to try to find out who murdered her son. It will definitely make you cry, but also you’ll learn things.”
Feeling My Flo (recommended by a reader), a reported podcast where menstruation is an event that happens to all types of bodies.
